Key points at a glance

- Dentists may provide factual information about their practice and treatments.
- In Germany, the limits are set mainly by the Healthcare Advertising Act (HWG) and the professional code of the regional dental chamber.
- In Austria, the Dentists Act and the rules of the Dental Chamber apply; in Switzerland, the Medical Professions Act.
- This guide provides an overview and does not replace legal advice.

A good dental website should build trust, lower the threshold for anxious patients and win new patients for specific treatments. At the same time, advertising for healthcare professions is more strictly regulated than in other industries. If you know the limits, you can still build a website that convinces.

## Germany: Healthcare Advertising Act and professional code

Dentists may publish factual, profession-related information. Advertising contrary to professional rules – i.e. promotional, misleading or comparative advertising – is prohibited under the professional codes of the regional dental chambers. The Healthcare Advertising Act also regulates how treatments may be advertised.

### What is generally allowed

- Describe treatments factually: process, duration, aftercare and possible alternatives.
- Name areas of focus and additional qualifications, provided they have actually been obtained.
- Specialist dentist titles, provided you have completed the further training.
- Show team, practice rooms and equipment with real photos.
- Information on costs, co-payments and billing.

### Where caution is needed

- Promises of cure or guarantees of a specific result.
- Superlatives such as “the best implantology in town”.
- Before-and-after pictures for purely aesthetic procedures without medical necessity.
- Patient statements that present a treatment success in a misleading way.
- Discount campaigns or vouchers for treatments.

## Mandatory legal notice details (Germany)

In addition to name, address and contact details under the Digital Services Act (DDG), the legal notice of a dental practice must include:

- the statutory professional title “Zahnarzt” or “Zahnärztin” and the country in which it was awarded,
- the responsible regional dental chamber,
- for contracted dentists, the responsible Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists as the supervisory authority,
- the professional regulations, such as the Dentistry Act, the Healthcare Professions Chamber Act and the professional code, with a note on where they can be viewed,
- for shared practices or medical centres, the legal form and authorised representatives.

## Austria: Dentists Act and Dental Chamber

In Austria, the Dentists Act and the rules of the Austrian Dental Chamber govern how practices may inform. Here too: factual information yes, unobjective or misleading advertising no.

For patients it is particularly important whether you are a contracted dentist (Kassenzahnarzt) or a private dentist (Wahlzahnarzt). Explain clearly which insurers you bill and how reimbursement works for private dentists. The legal notice follows the E-Commerce Act, the Commercial Code and the Media Act and additionally contains the professional title and chamber membership.

## Switzerland: Medical Professions Act and SSO

In Switzerland, the Medical Professions Act requires advertising to be objective, to meet a public need and to be neither misleading nor intrusive. The SSO code of conduct and cantonal health laws also apply.

Since most dental treatments in Switzerland are paid privately, transparent information on cost estimates, tariffs and supplementary insurance is particularly in demand. It is factual, useful and searched for specifically by patients.

## Factual and still convincing

The most effective dental websites don’t rely on advertising messages but on clarity: what happens during an implant treatment? How does the first appointment for anxious patients work? What does a professional teeth cleaning cost? Such content is unproblematic under professional law and at the same time exactly what patients search for on Google.

Our page [Websites for dentists](https://wpressprofis.de/en/website-dentists/) shows how we implement this. In any case, have the legal notice and legally sensitive wording reviewed by your chamber or a specialist.
